# Creating an account transfer

> Move money between two accounts in Commander Finance—record both sides of the transfer, set pending and completed dates, and keep balances in sync.

An account transfer records money moving between two accounts tracked by Commander Finance—for example, paying a credit card from your checking account, or moving funds from checking into savings. Commander records the transfer against both accounts at once, so the balances on each side stay in sync without you entering two separate transactions.

## Opening the create transfer form

You can create a transfer from three different places in Commander:

* The **Home** page shows a **Create Transfer** button in its row of quick actions near the top.
* The **Accounts** page includes a Create Transfer entry in its three-dot context menu, near the top of the page content.
* An individual account's detail page exposes a Create Transfer entry in the same three-dot context menu near the top of the page content, which pre-selects that account as the transfer's source.

Whichever entry point you use, a form titled **Create Account Transfer** appears on top of your current page.

## Entering transfer details

The form begins with two account dropdowns side by side. Select the account funds are leaving from in the **Source Account** field, and the account receiving the funds in the **Target Account** field. Both fields are required, and the two accounts must be different—Commander displays `The source and target accounts must be different` if you pick the same account on both sides. The dropdown for each side automatically excludes whichever account you selected on the other side.

Below the accounts, enter the transfer amount in the **Transfer Amount** field. The amount must be greater than zero; Commander shows `The transfer amount must be set` for a zero value and `The transfer amount must be positive` if you enter a negative number. Enter the amount as a positive value regardless of which direction the money is moving—the source and target account selections already determine the direction.

The **Memo** field is required and accepts up to 120 characters. Use it to describe the transfer, such as "Credit card payment" or "Monthly savings transfer." Commander displays `The memo must be set` if the field is empty when you try to save.

## Setting transfer dates

Every transfer has a **Pending Date** that defaults to today. The pending date represents when the transfer was initiated. Click the calendar icon to open the date picker, or use the segmented input to adjust the month, day, and year individually. Commander does not allow future dates—if you select one, the form displays `The pending date cannot be in the future` and blocks saving until you choose today or earlier.

Below the pending date, the **Transfer Completed** checkbox controls whether the transfer has fully settled. The box is checked by default for new transfers, which reveals a **Completed Date** field that also defaults to today. The completed date is similarly limited to today or earlier; if it falls in the future, Commander shows `The completed date cannot be in the future`. The completed date must fall on or after the pending date.

Clear **Transfer Completed** to record the transfer as still pending. The completed date field hides, and Commander saves the transfer without a completion date. You can come back later to mark the transfer completed once it settles in your accounts.

## Completing transfer creation

Click **Save Transfer** to record the transfer. Commander validates all fields and displays inline error messages if anything is missing or invalid; the form stays open until validation passes. After a successful save, the form closes and Commander records the transfer against both accounts—the source account balance decreases by the transfer amount and the target account balance increases by the same amount. The transfer also appears in each account's transaction history, linked together so edits to one side stay in sync with the other.

If you decide not to create the transfer, close the form using the **Cancel** button, the X button, or by clicking away from the form.
