# Managing your profile and sign-in

> Change your display name, verify your email, update the password you sign in with, or delete your Commander Finance account and its data.

The Profile & Sign-in page in Commander Finance holds everything tied to your identity rather than
your budget: the name and email on your account, the methods you sign in with, and account deletion.
The page is available whether or not your subscription is active.

## Opening the page

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Settings">Tap or click **Settings** in the sidebar.</Step>

  <Step title="Pick Profile & Sign-in">
    Under the Account section, choose **Profile & Sign-in**. The row's
    subtitle reads "Change your name or password, or delete your account."
  </Step>
</Steps>

The page has three sections—**Profile**, **Sign-in**, and **Delete account**—stacked top to bottom.
Pull down to refresh if a value looks stale.

## Changing your display name

Your display name is the name Commander shows in the sidebar. The **Profile** section shows the
current name, or "Not set" if your account has none.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the name form">
    Tap **Edit** beside the display name.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter a new name">
    Type the name you want. The name cannot be empty and cannot exceed 300
    characters; Commander trims leading and trailing spaces for you.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">Tap **Save**.</Step>
</Steps>

A "Display name updated" message confirms the change, and the sidebar picks up the new name.

If your account's primary sign-in is a provider rather than Email and password—Google, Apple,
Facebook, GitHub, or Microsoft—no **Edit** button appears. The row reads "Your name comes from
Google" and names whichever provider applies. That provider sends your name to Commander at every
sign-in, so an edit here would be overwritten the next time you sign in. Change the name with the
provider and the new name follows you into Commander.

Linking a provider to an account that already signs in with Email and password does not take the
**Edit** button away. Only the primary sign-in decides this.

## Verifying your email

The **Profile** section shows your email address with a badge reading either **Verified** or **Not
verified**. The address itself is display-only; Commander cannot change it.

If the badge reads **Not verified**, tap **Resend verification email** and follow the link in the
message that arrives. The button then reads "Verification email sent" until you reload the page, so
you can tell the request went through.

## Reviewing how you sign in

The **Sign-in** section lists every method linked to your account—Email and password, Apple,
Facebook, GitHub, Google, or Microsoft. The list is read-only—you cannot add or remove a method from
this page.

The list also tells you whether the next section applies to you. A Password row appears only when one
of your methods is Email and password. An account that signs in only through Google or Apple has no
Commander password to change, so no Password row appears.

## Changing your password

Commander hands password changes to Auth0, its identity provider, rather than taking a new password
on this page. Expect to sign in again partway through—the extra sign-in is what proves the request
came from you.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start the change">
    In the **Sign-in** section, tap **Change password**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in again">
    Enter your credentials when Commander asks, even though you are already
    signed in. On the web, the app hands you to the sign-in screen and
    returns you to this page afterward. In the iOS and Android apps, a
    sign-in sheet opens over the page.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the password page">
    The row now reads "Your password change page is ready" once the request
    completes. Tap **Continue to change password**. A browser tab opens on
    the web; in the iOS and Android apps the page opens in a sheet over
    Commander.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the new password">Finish on the page that opened.</Step>
</Steps>

Commander does not learn whether you completed the change, so the row settles on "Finish changing
your password on the page that opened" rather than confirming success. If the page did not open and the
row still shows **Continue to change password**, tap it again—the request stays valid. If the row
shows **Change password** instead, as it does when a browser blocks the new tab, tap it to start
over.

## Deleting your account

Deleting removes your Commander account, along with the accounts, transactions, budget lines, and
merchants inside it. The app treats the deletion as final and asks you to confirm in writing, so
[export your data](/how-to/export-data) first if you want your own copy.
[Our Retention Policies](/about/legal/privacy-policy#our-retention-policies) covers how long
Commander holds data after a deletion and when you can ask to have an account restored.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the confirmation">
    In the **Delete account** section, tap **Delete account**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Type DELETE">
    Type `DELETE` in the field labeled "Type DELETE to confirm"—the button
    stays disabled until the text matches exactly, capital letters included.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">Tap **Delete account** in the dialog.</Step>

  <Step title="Sign in again">
    Enter your credentials when Commander asks.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm again, on the web">
    The dialog reopens reading "You've signed in again. Type DELETE once
    more to delete your account." Type `DELETE` and tap **Delete account**.
    Leaving the page to sign in clears the field, which is why the web asks
    twice; the iOS and Android apps delete the account as soon as you finish
    signing in.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Commander deletes the account and signs you out.

## If something goes wrong

* **"We couldn't confirm it's you."** The second sign-in did not complete. Tap **Change password** or
  **Delete account** again and finish signing in. In the iOS and Android apps, closing the sign-in
  sheet cancels the request and changes nothing.
* **Signed out unexpectedly.** Signing in as a different account during the second sign-in ends the
  session. Sign back in as the account you meant to change.
* **"Unable to load the profile."** Retry from the message the page shows, or pull down to refresh.
