Commander offers two paths to the Budget Settings page. The first route takes you through the Budget page by clicking “Budget” in the sidebar, then clicking the three-dot icon in the upper right corner of the Budget page, and selecting “Budget Settings” from the menu. The second route goes directly through Settings by clicking “Settings” in the sidebar and then selecting “Budget Settings” from the settings menu.

Switching between modes

The Mode section displays three radio button options; Tracking, Targets, and Envelope. For detailed explanations of how each mode works, see the budget modes page. Select your desired mode by clicking the corresponding radio button. Commander applies the change immediately without requiring a save action, and you remain on the Budget Settings page.

What happens to your data

Commander preserves all existing budget line data, transactions, and historical information when you switch modes. The next time you view the Budget page or any Budget Line Detail view, the display updates to reflect your new mode’s structure and calculations. When switching to Targets Mode, any budget lines without defined target amounts display a warning symbol on the Budget page. If you previously used Targets Mode, your stored target values remain assigned to their lines. When switching to Envelope Mode, budget lines appear without funding until you transfer money into them from your unbudgeted funds pool. Mode-specific data like target amounts and envelope funding persists when you switch away—these values remain stored and reappear if you return to those modes later. Your budget cycle settings remain unchanged when switching modes. The time period type, start date, and other cycle configurations persist across all mode changes.
